How to Make A Great Celebrity Mii

Want to improve your celebrity mii making skills? Or just make one of yourself?

It's very difficult to get a mii to look right on the first try, unless the character looks very distinct or has an extraordinary personality. The Key to making Great miis is to just keep at it, go back to it later if it doesn't look good right now. You'll be able to come up with better ways of sculpting your art. Most of my miis are work in progress. These tips will help you make celebrity mii as well as a mii of yourself.

Making miis are just like cartooning or drawing manga, here are some tips to help you make a more interesting mii.

  1. Go to Google Images and search of pictures of the character you wish to make
  2. Find a good head-on image as well as any other pictures that conveys the spirit of the character, for example: Dubya is famous for the blank spaced-out clueless face, Cheney looks like a bold scheming politician.
  3. Examine the images closely, and write down any features that jump out at you like small eyes, vrtually non-existent eye brows, big lips, big nose, etc.
  4. Important: Make a sketch of the character on paper, then EXAGGERATE his/her features! Draw that big nose really big or thicken those unibrow ten times, or if the character looks angry, draw the face to look VERY angry. It's just like cartooning, you need to exaggerate the features to make the character interesting.

  5. Now go to the Mii Channel and start making the character. I usually start with body size and face shape, then facial hair, glasses, and mole, eyes, and then the rest.
  6. Setting a right body size and face shape will orient how you view the character while you create the mii.
  7. Facial and regular hair, and accessories dictates the over all face.
  8. Now focus on the eyes, they are the most important parts of a mii, they can make or break a mii. They convey the spirit of the mii--windows to the soul of this mii. They don't need to be realistic, but they do need to match the spirit of the mii.
  9. You can now work on the other features to match your sketch.

Important tips to improve your mii!

  • Move those eyes, nose, and mouth up and down! The default position of the eyes, eye brows, mouth, etc. is the MOST GENERIC position you can have. They're fine for BORING miis, but you want to make interesting ones, right? So if your sketch as a big forehead, move those eyes, nose, etc. down to the lower half of the face. If your sketch demands a large chin, move UP the eyes and nose, etc. I never ever leave the facial features in their original positions.
  • Spread / Squeeze / Shrink / Enlarge those facial features! You'll be surprised at different expressions you can achieve just by spreading or squeezing those eyes and eye brows. Now try it with all facial features! Again, I usually don't leave the facial features in their original sizes, but I modify them to make a more expressive mii.
